The Lenovo Vibe P1 was announced alongside the P1m in India last year. The Vibe P1 packs in some mid-range hardware, but its highlight is clearly the 5000mAh battery which is where it gets its "Power Player" tagline from. The Vibe P1 is the bigger sibling compared to lớn the Vibe P1m & certainly comes with better specs và a higher price tag of Rs 15,999.

Motorola clearly popularised the budget segment with the Moto G but with handsets like Xiaomi"s Redmi series & the recently announced LeEco Le 1s, it is getting really hard to lớn stand out in this price competitive segment. So does the Lenovo Vibe P1 with its 5000mAh battery, metal body toàn thân and fingerprint reader stand out from the rest of the competition? Let"s find out.

Build and Design: 7/10

When the điện thoại was announced, we did have a lot of expectations from the Vibe P1. More so, it looked pretty good from afar with its metal back that also hides the large non-removable battery.

*

On the front we have a đen front face with a 5.5 inch display at the centre sporting a 72% screen-to-body ratio. The top bezel area contains the receiver, notification LED, front-facing camera & the ambient light & proximity sensors. The bottom area of the bezel features two capacitive buttons for the recents menu and the back key. The home button in the center also houses the fingerprint reader and can be pressed down to lớn get to the homescreen.

*

*

The đứng top side features a 3.5mm headphone jack & secondary mic while the bottom hosts the the micro USB port which is flanked by speaker grilles on both sides (only the right one is functional).

*

On the back we have the two plastic inserts at the top and bottom end. The camera sits higher up & is accompanied by a dual tone LED flash placed just below it.

*

The slider button on the left is used to turn on the Ultra power nguồn Saver mode, that switches off most apps.

After using Vibe P1 for a while we have come to lớn the conclusion that fit & finish could have been a bit better. The metal finish is not as smooth as we wanted it to be but that"s really not the problem. The problem with the thiết kế is the use of plastic inserts at the top & bottom. The cutouts (shown above) look shabby at best and jut out killing the seamless look of the back cover. We did wish that Lenovo went with directly accessible SIM card & microSD card trays instead of hiding them under a plastic cover on the top. It does take some time to lớn figure out where you put in the SIM card and microSD thẻ if you haven"t referred to the manual already.

While we appreciated the big battery it does come with some heft at 189 grams.

Features: 7.5/10

The Lenovo Vibe P1 is definitely better than the P1m even though it lacks the nano coating feature that makes the latter splash-proof. The P1 packs in a 5.5-inch Full HD IPS LCD display with Gorilla Glass 3 protection. Inside sits the now ageing Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 SoC clocked at 1.5GHz & an Adreno 405 GPU.

The handset packs in 2GB of RAM, that seems a bit less considering its price tag (and the competition) but makes up for it with 32GB of internal storage and 128GB of expandable microSD thẻ support.

*

The camera department features a 13MP rear camera with dual-tone LED Flash & PDAF for a quick focus lock. The front facing camera is a 5MP unit.

Connectivity options inlcude 4G LTE / 3G radios with dual nano SIM slots, WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, bluetooth 4.1 LE và NFC. Keeping up with the times, the P1 also features a fingerprint reader on the front. Also available on board is FM radio.

All of the above is powered by a non-removable 5000mAh battery & the handset boots to Android 5.1 Lollipop with Lenovo"s Vibe UI.

Software: 6/10

While the software on the Lenovo Vibe P1m was lighter và came with fewer customisations, the same cannot be said about the Vibe P1. Although better than the P1m, the P1 lacks a custom music player, calendar which was replaced by a the Google Music app & Google"s Calendar.

*

The theme manager comes with just 6 themes and no access lớn the online store. Theme manager does let you mix và match themes (recents thực đơn style, lockscreen style etc.), but will not let you change individual elements like icons. The built-in themes were simply too colourful for our taste & we wished that there was an option for a Nexus-like stock android UI.

*

We did notice Smart scene feature that will change device profiles automatically as programmed depending on the time of day. Again there was the physical switch on the left side that will allow one to lớn switch to lớn the Ultra power saver mode on the fly.

However, there are not too many customisations in here that one would not find on another smartphone. The battery saver mode is simply the same one that you get one stock android Lollipop. Not so impressive was the choice of the fingerprint reader module that can store only two fingerprints. Placed down on a table, it is hard lớn place your thumb on the reader & with no option to showroom an index finger we often ended up turning off this feature from the very beginning.

What you bởi get on both the P1m và the P1 is plenty of bloatware. Luckily all of them can be uninstalled.

Display: 7.5/10

*

The display on the Vibe P1 did impress. It is a Full HD (1920x1080 pixels) IPS LCD unit with a Gorilla Glass 3 screen for protection. The colour saturation was spot on & users can even tweak the colour settings by heading khổng lồ the Display colour balance section, where they can opt for Default, Comfort, Super bright & even a custom mode. The IPS LCD panel had good viewing angles và was pretty sharp.

*

While we liked the colour reproduction of the display, something that was not so impressive were its brightness levels. This in turn affected its outdoor performance and left us cringing to read notifications and messages in direct sunlight. Adding to this was the tricky Auto-brightness that forced us lớn turn it off most of the time.

On the Vibe P1m we found a vibrant display that was brighter than that on the P1 but lost out due to bad viewing angles.

Performance: 7/10

The massive 5000mAh battery aside, the Lenovo Vibe P1 delivers as expected. This would bring it in line with the Motorola moto G Turbo that packs in similar hardware. We saw a bit of dropped frames & a some stutter while scrolling in apps but not something that would hamper the user experience & this only happened occasionally.

*

Gaming was again not too great in terms of textures but Real Racing 3, 4x4 Jam HD, Asphalt 8Dead Trigger 2 ran smoothly provided we stuck to lớn the medium settings. The 2GB of RAM may have been the reason why we could not crank up the graphics settings for some games.

*

Audio quality through the receiver was loud and clear and the same can be said about voice unique for the listener on the other end. The loud speaker albeit a single unit was louder than we had expected, but it did crack at the highest volume cấp độ (which was a bit too loud for our hearing anyways). Listening lớn music, it was not stellar, but good enough & will be satisfactory for the casual user. We encountered no heating issues with the device.

Camera: 7/10

*

The 13MP camera on board the Lenovo Vibe P1 packs in an f/2.2 aperture và Phase Detection Autofocus (PDAF) as well along with a dual tone LED flash. While this may sound lượt thích a lot, the image chất lượng left us wanting for more especially keeping the smartphone"s price tag in mind.

While the colour reproduction was fine, there was plenty of purple fringing around the corners.

*

*

The HDR mode literally saves the day as the camera has the tendency lớn overexpose leading to plenty of blown-out highlights in bright lighting scenarios.

*

The PDAF mechanism is fast, but lens is not as sharp as we would have liked it khổng lồ be. This was a problem not only in low light, but in daylight situations as well, which is a bit odd.

There is plenty of over processing meaning that the details are often blurred & look blotched even if you are taking a close-up or macro shot (you will need khổng lồ click on the image check out the blurry details).

*

Infact we managed khổng lồ get sharper imagery with the Vibe P1m that packs in a smaller 8MP unit as the primary camera. The Vibe P1m strangely managed to get more details and get a better grip on the the exposure leading lớn sharper và balanced images. You can have a look at the Vibe P1m samples by clicking here.

Battery: 9/10

Both the Lenovo siblings had one thing going for them at launch, battery life. While the Lenovo Vibe P1m packs in a stunning 4000mAh battery, the P1 takes things a notch higher and offers a 5000mAh one. In short, the P1 will last long, really long.

*

With casual use the battery easily got us through 2 days of use. This would include continuous WhatsApp messaging, two e-mail accounts on sync, clicking about 10-20 photos a day & plenty of YouTube video clip streaming. Infact, the Lenovo Vibe P1 got us out of our usual routine of charging the điện thoại cảm ứng every day. Even better, the battery holds the charge well even when switched off. Add to this the stock android power saver mode & you would not need to plug it in for a few days.

What we did mention earlier và was a bit disappointing was the weight. But hey this is Android and this is no miracle, so a bigger battery means a you have to giảm giá with a heavier smartphone. May be the successor to the Vibe P1 could see a lighter smartphone.

Verdict and Price in India

We lượt thích the display và the battery life on the Lenovo Vibe P1, but there are plenty of things to fix in other important areas lượt thích the camera, & build quality. In fact, there were plenty of areas where we found its sibling the Vibe P1m did better, such as the camera. Again the P1m is also a lighter handset so it may fit the bill for those who are not inclined towards performance.

*

As for the rest of the competition, well there is just one điện thoại that will run circles around the Vibe P1 and that is the LeEco Le 1s. It packs in twice as much horsepower under the hood và even comes with a worthy camera at Rs 10,999. But it also comes with its own phối of problems lượt thích we experienced in our full review so it isn"t perfect either.

Next up is the Motorola xe máy X Play that can be considered an all-rounder. It packs in a sizeable battery, 21MP camera and a Nexus-like stock game android experience, meaning that it runs smoother & is more responsive as well.

The Lenovo Vibe P1 has seen plenty of competition since its launch. At Rs 15,999 it is not an all-rounder và neither is it stellar in terms of performance. What it does bởi vì well is last long as a smartphone. So for those looking for a smartphone with battery life in mind, look no further than the Vibe P1.
